Most of the vaults re ect an age when Southampton was at the centre of the wine trade, when most of the wine imported from France came through the port on its way to London and other parts of the country. Hythe & Waterside Rotary President, Terri Whitehouse, said: “This evening spent walking round old Southampton Commemorative D-Day 80 Bench in Langley Following a request from the community to replace a bench Fawley Parish Council took the opportunity to mark the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings by providing a commemorative bench to replace the broken one. County Councillor Alexis McEvoy, Cllr Matthew Hartmann and Cllr Alan Alvey provided the funding for its purchase. It was o cially ‘unveiled’ by the Chairman of Fawley Parish Council, Cllr Alan Alvey the day before the anniversary. Also present were Cllrs Josie Poole, Laura O’Halloran, Alexa Carcas and Matthew Hartmann and residents from the local community. e black metal bench features the words ‘D Day 1944’ and the names of the ve beaches; Utah, Omaha, Sword, Gold, and Juno. It also features soldiers wading through the sea to the French shore. Unveiling the new bench THOSE HIDDEN VAULTS! An evening tour of the Southampton Vaults by Experience Hampshire was enjoyed by Hythe & Waterside Rotary. A very knowledgeable guide, Geo , explained the history behind old parts of the City including some of the many vaults that were used by medieval merchants. Rotarians and their friends were treated to trips with such a well-informed guide was a real treat for our members and friends.
