Karen led a project to open six new cadet units, opening up the opportunity for more young people to gain essential social, life, work and wellbeing skills, including a BTEC Level 2 quali cation. • The FireWise programme to help young people who are showing an unhealthy interest in re to understand their feelings and the circumstances that lead to re setting behaviour or fascination with re. • The School Fire Safety Education programme which engages with around 29,000 young people in schools across Hampshire and Isle of Wight each year. Neil Odin, Chief Fire O cer, said: “Karen deserves this recognition of her commitment and passion for improving the life chances of young people. She is an inspiration not only to the young people she works with but also to her team and colleagues. We are all delighted that she has received this Honour.” Karen Farr, Children and Young People and Volunteer Manager at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) has been awarded an MBE – a Medal of the Order of the British Empire – in the King’s Birthday Honours list 2023. e list marks the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK. Karen, who works as part of the Children and Young People team at HIWFRS, has been recognised for services to young people and public safety. Karen said: “I feel incredibly honoured to have received this award. To be able, together with the Children & Young People team, to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children and young people is a huge privilege. I am blessed with a brilliant team and for me, this award is recognition for all the staff and volunteers who are committed and passionate about the work we deliver. I am also grateful to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and the Fire Authority for their unwavering commitment to improving positive outcomes for young people in our communities.” Karen, joined Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service 15 years ago as a Prince’s Trust Team Leader and has played an integral role in developing the work of the Children & Young People team ever since. Karen and her team deliver a variety of programmes that help to keep thousands of children and young people safe: • The Prince’s Trust programme at HIWFRS which has helped more than 2,200 young people (16-25-yearolds) who are unemployed and not in education or training. e course o ers young people the chance to build con dence through a residential week away, Karen Farr, Children and Young People and Volunteer Manager at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) team challenges, work experience placement, and community project. In its most recent assessment the HIWFRS Prince’s Trust programme was graded as outstanding in its delivery. • Fire Cadets which provides fun and challenging opportunities for young people to reach their full potential contributing to safer, stronger and healthier New Forest (East) Probus Club June Meeting e New Forest (East) Probus Club held their June meeting at Dibden Golf Club on ursday 15th June. Vice President Brian, deputising for President Henley, welcomed 20 members, and two guests, to the 410th meeting. Future events planned for the Club are: Co ee morning at Gin’s Farm RSYC 14th July; Visit to ExxonMobil Petro Chemical Plant, (date to be con rmed); Co ee morning at Rosie Lea Tea Rooms on 31st August; Potential trip on Solent Dolphins ‘Alison MacGregor’ (tba) and Lunch at MJ’s (Brockenhurst College) 10th November. e meeting concluded with a very entertaining talk by Brian Freeland on ‘View from the Wings’. e talk experiences of theatre personnel and unintended performance errors. e planned speaker for Thursday 20th July is Judy eobald talking on ‘Tales from a brute and beastly shore’. New Forest Aviation Group (NFAG) meets monthly on the second Friday of the month (except August and December) at Lyndhurst Community Centre to enjoy a presentation from a speaker on all things ying (and beyond) followed by refreshments and chat with the speaker and NFAG friends. e next meeting is on Friday 14th July for a talk titled ‘RAF Beaulieu’ byMarc Heighway. e following meeting is on Friday 8th September. ey meet at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start and the meeting normally nishes 9.45pm.
