For more information please visit: www.ddaylepe. org.uk On Saturday 17th June, on a gloriously sunny day, Gang Warily held their annual Armed Forces Day event. is year, for the rst time it was a combined event with Classic Car Clubs from around the area. e Classic Car competition was judged by Aldred Drummond. As usual the D-Day Lepe Heritage Group had their Gazebo present, and had a very busy day explaining and describing the importance of Lepe Beach and Stanswood Bay to the many visitors to their stand. Few visitors, many of them local, had no idea of the size and importance that this small area played towards the embarkation to Normandy for the D-Day assault. ere were Allied troops from many nations located in this area, especially American soldiers. For the local children especially, it was a revelation that there were soldiers who did not have white skins. e build up towards embarkation date was enormous, with tanks and camps hidden under the many trees that were in the isolated area on the Waterside peninsular. en one morning the local residents woke up and found that all the military had disappeared. e few artifacts that the D-Day Lepe Heritage Group had on show were of great interest. ese included a scale model of a ‘caisson’ (the underpart of the Mulberry Harbour construction), 6 of which were built on Lepe Beach. It is still possible to see the hardstanding they were built on and launched from. ere was a couple of the bearings of the type that the caisson was winched into the sea over from the beach at high tide. e other item of great interest was the ‘Bomb Map’, loaned from Fawley District Council. is depicts the southerly most area of Waterside from Hythe down to Calshot, Lepe and across to Exbury. It shows the distribution and type of bomb/incendiaries dropped over the area as the Italian or German bombers returned from bombing Southampton. In order to conserve fuel for the return journey, they opened their bomb bays and dropped any remaining ammunition onto the land beneath. e Map includes, to the especial delight of the many children who visited the Gazebo, positions of Unexploded Bombs, still in the ground. e whole show was vibrant and very well attended with many di erent attractions. At 3.15pm a Spit re made its appearance to the delight of everyone. It made 3 circuits of the showground, ‘waggled’ it’s wings in a ‘goodbye’ sign, and ew o , with most people waving happily to it. e show o cially closed at 4pm but many people enjoying their picnic and listening to the various di erent bands who had entertained everyone during the day, were reluctant to leave such a happy event.
