Food is dropped o throughout the day - when the library is open - and anyone can help themselves. e level of stock and what products are available varies daily as it is entirely dependent on what the supermarkets and suppliers give to the volunteers, this means that the Community Fridge does sometimes run out of food. As the project is hoping to reduce food waste, there is no charge for the food at the Community Fridge; however you are welcome to make a donation to the Waterside Food Project via: https://donorbox.org/ the-waterside-food-project Donations will be used to further enhance the work of the Waterside Food Project, including plans to o er free community meals, cooking lessons and the development of a garden project to help people use their gardens to grow for the community. e Community Fridge has been able to open thanks to donations of a fridge by Applemore College Canteen and a new freezer from Black eld Baptist Church, 17th Port & Maritime regiment at Marchwood for providing a van and man power to get all the fridges and freezers moved to the library, local Solicitors TMT Legal Services who are sponsoring the cost of the electricity, and of course the Waterside Food Project volunteers. Lucie Man said: “Food waste is such a huge issue, the Community Fridge is all about food waste prevention, if we don’t collect the food, it would all go in the bin. Thank you to our fantastic team of volunteer drivers who go out tirelessly every night collecting food. Special thanks to Applemore College Canteen and Blackfield Baptist Church for providing us with our fridges and to TMT Legal Services for stepping in to sponsor our electricity as this was a major issue for us. Thanks also to the volunteers and the library staff. The fridge is there for the whole community to share.” Due to health and safety, the Community Fridge cannot accept unwanted food that you may have at home. However local gardeners and allotment owners are welcome to bring down and donate any excess home grown fruit and vegetables. e Waterside Food Project is part of the New Forest Aquaponics CIC, which run many other amazing projects in the local area including boomerang bags. ese are cloth bags handmade by volunteers that are free to use at the Community Fridge: take a bag and use it, then return it or reuse it, helping to reduce the need for plastic bags.
