The Murder of Lily White, published on 4th April, tells the tragic story of 20-year-old domestic servant Lily White who was asphyxiated in woodland o Mullin’s Lane in Hythe. Her ancé, a one-handed factory worker from Hythe named Frederick Corneby, was convicted of her murder at the Winchester Assizes and sentenced to be hanged, although he was subsequently granted a reprieve. “It was a sensational case at the time, and local and national newspapers covered it in great detail,” says David Green. “Yet the case is almost completely forgotten today. In my book I explore the background of the characters involved in the drama and delve into their actions and possible motives. In many respects it is a shocking and disturbing crime. I also wanted to examine how the people of Hythe responded to a murderer in their midst.” The Murder of Lily White is published by Hastings Press, copies are for sale in e Herald o ce for £12.
