As well as winning the nearest the pin prize on the 2nd, Barry Nicholas emerged leader of Division 1, just beating Chris Angell on countback. However in Division 2, Mike Cavaney simply annihilated all opposition, finishing with a magni cent +7 to win the Bill Murray Trophy. Mike was absolutely delighted as this is the rst trophy he has ever won, but hopefully it will not be the last. BILL MURRAY TROPHY Mike Cavaney with the Bill Murray Trophy Music at Beaulieu Each year Music at Beaulieu awards scholarships to talented young musicians from the New Forest area to support their training. Many of the past winners have gone on to become professional musicians, some returning to Beaulieu to give concerts in their own right. e Awards Concert gives this year’s winners and runners-up an opportunity to perform their test pieces in public and the audience a chance to listen to these musicians of the future. Past winners have included pianists, violinists and saxophonists - the programme is always something of a surprise. e concert takes place on Saturday 22nd June, 7pm in Beaulieu Abbey Church; tickets are £10 each and available online: www.musicatbeaulieu. org, from the box o ce, tel: 07770 859900, or at the door. e ever-popular King’s Men will perform again on Saturday 13th July. Update from Waterside Climate Action Network (waterCAN) range of habitat and to allow for the growth of wild owers and the insect life they attract. Apparently, according to a research study by the UK charity Butterfly Conservation, letting your garden grow wild with long grass can increase butter y numbers by up to 93%. A good excuse for some of us reluctant gardeners! On a similar theme, the Soil Association report a worrying decline in worms over the past 25 years. Soil containing worms is both healthier and more e ective in alleviating ooding. ey are trying to build up a nationwide worm map. Anyone interested in taking part can download the Worm Hunt Guide from the Soil Association website. ere is even a worm charming championships held in Falmouth. e record is 567 worms in 30 minutes! Some WaterCAN members attended a Green Week lecture at the University of Southampton by Ian Williams, Professor in applied environmental science; Professor Williams has o ered to talk at one of our meetings later in the year. And nally, the forthcoming 80th anniversary of D-Day holds an extra poignancy for those of us of a certain age whose parents were involved in the war in Europe following D-Day. ey helped to shape history during the war, but also a erwards in improved opportunities from which we bene tted in education, housing, and of course the NHS. Many of us would like to think we could leave a similar legacy for our children. Ben’s theme will be “Exposing Greenwash-how to spot it and what you can do about it”. Ben is a former environment editor of e Times, and is now an investigative journalist working for openDemocracy. He won the “Environment Journalist of 2024” award at the UK press awards. His talk will include issues relevant to the Waterside. All welcome. Following the Surfers Against Sewage presentation in April, and Southern Water’s call for pollution spotters, a group of swimmers at Calshot are recording the results of their beach clean-ups. See our website for further details about how you can report water pollution. We are in the process of arranging for a Southern Water representative to attend an open meeting in July. He will be talking about how to prevent sewer blockages, and how Southern Water plans to reduce pollution episodes. On the 9th May, WaterCAN heard from David Yapp, a retired engineer who has worked on a range of energy projects during his career. In his presentation, which was a run through of a presentation planned for government ministers, David talked about the potential of hydrogen as the key to achieving net zero.
