Carving a tree stump in situ is best le to chainsaw artists so four club members have carved separate small relief images that can be added to the stump to complement the chainsaw art. As the tree has stood there for over a century, the four topics were chosen to re ect local history and wildlife. It was there when the Titanic sailed from Southampton, the hovercra was invented by Sir Christopher Cockerell, who lived by the green, and some of the most common wildlife seen there are oystercatchers and shore crabs. ese have been carved in sweet chestnut wood by Di Smith, Paul Humphriss, Maggie Port and Annette relfall. e woodcarvers have previously contributed to local heritage. In 2000 the club, known then as Waterside Guild of Woodcarvers, was involved with a Millennium project. A mosaic of 35 small relief carvings was produced and now hangs on the wall of the Hythe Library meeting room. Most members regard woodcarving as a hobby that keeps them pleasantly occupied and keeps this heritage skill alive. ey work with a huge range of woods and on a very wide range of topics. Many of these will be on display at the club’s annual exhibition at St Andrews Church Hall in Dibden Purlieu on Saturday 15th August. is is a free event and an excellent opportunity to see local cra smanship and nd out more about the club. Waterside Woodcarvers meet every other Thursday evening at Noadswood School throughout the year plus various socials and outings. Millennium mosaic project of 35 small relief carvings displayed at Hythe Library Bird In Flight; Movement And Speed Waterside Art Group is delighted to announce its next event, welcoming professional artist Lindsey Cole to give an art demonstration. Lindsey will demonstrate how to use acrylics to create interesting backgrounds, which can be used for many subjects including birds, animals or oral images. She will then show how to apply the main subject, perhaps a king sher or an owl, to the background using water-soluble oils. She will share tips and tricks along the way, including how to create an impression of movement and speed. Lindsey’s work covers a range of subjects and media, using expressive mark-making and creating textural surfaces. She draws her inspiration from the natural world – the New Forest, where she is based, and the surrounding coastline – responding to atmosphere and light. Lindsey started her art career as a ceramic painter with Poole Pottery then, a er studying Fine Art at the Arts Institute Bournemouth, she became a full-time professional artist. Membership costs just £65 a year, which gives members the chance to attend weekly meetings and to show and sell their artwork at the summer exhibition.
