Just as importantly, it gives the youngsters a weekend away from their normal responsibilities when they can relax and make new friends and have some fun. Owen, who is 14 years old, said: “It was nice to be able to be a kid and not have any responsibilities. I love being a young carer but every now and then, it’s nice to be just Owen. Archery was my favourite activity. Also, all the adults were nice and I’d like to thank everyone involved.”. Mason, 13 years old, added: “I really enjoyed it, especially the archery. It was great and I’d like to do it again.” Avon Tyrell and outdoor activities Award-winning Local Journalist Releases First Novel John Barry Quinn, an award winning journalist, who lives in Hamble, has recently released his rst novel, e Reporter. Set in late 1980’s Hampshire, e Reporter is a crime novel, featuring Jude Devlin, a trainee journalist on a Southampton free newspaper. Jude uncovers a careerde ning story which could bring down the secretive crime family that run the city, and the corrupt senior police o cer who protects them. e family decide that, if Jude can’t be bought o or scared o , he must be got rid of… Like his main character, John worked on a free newspaper, The Advertiser, in Southampton in the late 80’s at the start of a successful career in newspapers, and went on to win the prestigious Campaigning Journalist of the Year award whilst on e Mail on Sunday. John comments: “For me, writing is a joy. But having the self-belief that someone else would want to read what you’ve written, well, it comes as a terrific surprise. I wrote a play, The Last Talent Show, that was performed locally, and seeing my words acted out on stage, and seeing the reaction of the audience, gave me the confidence to tackle the marathon of writing a novel. But it’s only after you’ve written it that you realise ‘that’s the easy bit’ and the real work is finding a publisher who believes in you and your writing!”’ John won the backing of major publisher Burton Mayers Books for e Reporter, which is now available from Waterstones in Southampton and Amazon.
