It will be housed in a cabinet on a wall outside the church so that it can also be accessed by members of the public if needed. Alongside this project the Club has also set up a training programme named ‘De brillators in Action’. is is a scheme which provides free de brillator training for members of local communities within the New Forest. e Club was encouraged to start it by paramedics from a local First Responders team that it and since then training sessions have been held in six di erent venues throughout the New Forest. To date, nearly 200 people have been taught how to manage an emergency situation, how to administer CPR and how to access and use a de brillator. ey are now in a far better position to help a person in cardiac arrest and to potentially save a life. e Club works very closely with West Meon Valley Heart Start, who provide the training, and Rotary Wessex Heartbeat who manage the bookings. e team from West Meon Heart Start are a group of highly experienced, medical volunteers including, paramedics, nurses, GPs and even a cardiac surgeon. ey always receive excellent reviews. ey are led by retired paramedic David Williamson who believes that everyone should know how to save a life and is driven to ensure that everyone throughout Hampshire can have access to free training. West Meon Heart Start don’t charge for the training but New Forest Rotary always make a donation towards their running costs. ey also meet any costs for the hire of premises, although many organisations waive this fee. Overall, the running costs are kept to a minimum but, whatever the costs, it is money well invested and the Club will continue to raise funds for this life-saving cause. e new scheme was recently deemed highly successful and funding has been allocated to continue the training for a further year. Two sessions have already been booked for the Totton Community at the ree Score Club on 2nd September and 7th October later this year. e recent Government initiative to ensure that every school, nationally, has a de brillator has increased the need for training and it is hoped that New Forest Rotary can liaise with local schools and introduce them to training groups like West Meon Heart Start. It is also hoped that the Club can work with neighbouring Rotary Groups to extend the training to other areas within the e Herald’s distribution area. If would like to receive De brillator training please check the New Forest Rotary website: www.rotaryribi.org where sessions are regularly advertised with details of how to book. Alternatively contact the Secretary using the Club contact page. Training sessions are always advertised a month in advance so also look out for posters locally and details in e Herald. You will be very welcome to attend and it could help you to save a life. supports. ey had found that, even though the public are reassured that a de brillator provides easy to follow spoken instructions, a large majority of people were scared at the thought of having to access and use one. ey were even worried that they could harm a patient if they didn’t know how to use it. is e ectively reduces the potential to save a person’s life. e scheme was rst set up in September 2022
