FORESTERS FLOWER CLUB CELEBRATES ITS GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY by Debbie Thorne, Foresters Flower Club Prior to the 6th of July, the committee was planning and prepping for the most wonderful evening of owers, fun and friendship! Tables decorated with fresh posey arrangements and bottles of fairy lights. e ra e and sales tables were adorned with temptations. e stage was set for the “Golden Oldie” demonstration by Marion and Mo. e celebratory cake was placed for all to see. Members were given celebratory pens and all could buy ra e tickets and items from the sales table before the evening began. ere were games including the handbag game; yellows and blues in support of Ukraine. Rosemary was used in remembrance. Blues included agapanthus, corn owers, hydrangea and campanula. Yellows included antirrhinum, small button spray chrysanthemums dotted throughout and gold plate achillea. Mo then demonstrated a beautiful hand tie in green and white. She started with di erent types of greenery in the centre, added owers, then green bear grass to add space and interest, and then alternated owers with di erent greenery. She nished with palm and myrtle around the outside and tied it with twine. e stems were trimmed level to the length for the vase. Gorgeous! Ruth, a founder member, made a toast and had tales from the early days. Deanna followed with a heartfelt poem using owers as descriptions in memory of her mother. e cake was cut by Jean and Clare and everyone tucked into crisps, sausage rolls and cakes; washed down with Pimms or fruit punch. en came the ra e with great excitement. e evening was rounded o with sincere thanks from our Chair to everyone attending and all of the committee. She emphasised the importance of owers, fun and friendship, and how apparent this had brought great delight to the whole evening! No one appeared to hurry away! Next meetings are: 3rd August: Demonstration ‘Fabulous Flowers’ by Lucinda Knapman, 7th September: Presentation ‘Vienna, e Waltz City’ by Chris Legrande. 8th September: Outing to RHS Wisley, all welcome: contact Sheila on: 023 8081 2810. Founder members and guests Clare and Jean Marion and Mo identifying fresh flowers, a plant quiz and card bingo. Marion and Mo entertained us delightfully with their double act! Mo created a beautiful traditional, triangular pedestal arrangement in gorgeous green and white. She used oral foam emphasising this was a special occasion! 50 years ago, owers were limited to seasons – chrysanthemums were dull in colour; carnations were Hampshire grown; antirrhinums etc. Marion discussed the in uence of Constance Spry on ower arranging 50 years ago, the use of pilchard tins, baked bean tins, jam jars, and chicken wire etc. In the 1970s, the European market exploded into Great Britain with colours, choices of owers and new owers e.g. Gerbera, all year. Marion made a gorgeous double ended vertical arrangement in e speaker at the next meeting will be Andrea Hillyard who will give a talk and a demonstration of oral art on Wednesday 9th August at 7.30pm. Meetings are held in the ree Score Club Hall, o Salisbury road, Totton. Visitors are most welcome at £2.50. e Open Summer Show takes place in the same venue on Saturday 12th August doors open at 1.30pm admission 50p.
