Kicking o in late July, Summer of Play activities have a family-festival feel, from circus workshops at Hinton Ampner and mini sports at e Vyne, to storybook adventures at Mottisfont, with pirate ships and magic beds. ere’s some wonderful outdoor theatre too. Designed with families in mind, Summer of Play activities are dotted around acres of gardens, with woods, parkland and meadows close by for further exploring. ere’s plenty of space for picnicking, with shady rest areas and cafés nearby. Richard Grudzinski the National Trust’s South East Experiences Curator said: “National Trust houses, gardens and countryside have inspired people for centuries and it’s in that same spirit that we’re throwing open the doors and inviting families to have fun at Trust places this summer and let their imaginations run wild.” Discover the wild and wonderful world of children’s author and illustrator John Burningham this summer at Mottisfont, near Romsey from 20th July to 29th September. Over 60 illustrations ll Mottisfont’s playful gallery spaces, with interactive fun that will immerse families in favourite stories including Mr Gumpy, Borka the Featherless Goose, Avocado Baby and Oi! Get O Our Train! Sketches, paintbrushes and other personal items reveal how John Burningham created these muchloved characters. ere are comfy reading zones to snuggle into with a book and stories are brought to life with colourful blown-up scenes for family photos plus dressing up inspiration. Look out for the life-size ‘magic’ bed that transports your hula hoop, hurdles and dance skills. On 31st July, 20th August and 28th August, 11am-2pm join circus company Storm in a Teacup to master amazing new skills, from plate spinning and diabolo to juggling and giant bubble blowing, no extra charge. Quantum eatre presents a delightful new adaptation of Beatrix Potter’s much-loved story, e Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck at Hinton Ampner on 9th and 16th August, 6.30pm–8pm.
