Gardeners have had to contend with challenging conditions this year with the relatively mild, windy and exceptionally wet weather making working outside less than enjoyable and bulbs and spring owering shrubs have come into bloom earlier than usual. e fears of the organisers that there would be nothing much to show proved to be unfounded and the East Boldre Village Hall was lled with the vibrant colours and fresh scent of spring owers. e professional judges, the Society’s President, Lady Montagu, and visitors were very complimentary, so it was all worthwhile. Lady Montagu kindly presented the following cups. e O’Donnell Cup for the best single exhibit in Flowers awarded to Maureen Medley. Lady Montagu’s Cup for most points in Flowers awarded to Maureen Medley. Lady Dent Cup for the Collection of Flowers awarded to Lady Caroline Evans. Evelyn Holt Cup for the best Pot Plant awarded to Laura Barber. Pleydell-Bouverie Cup for best exhibit in Floral Arrangement awarded to Liz Coppack. e May meeting was a very enjoyable Bluebell walk in Pondhead Enclosure, near Lyndhurst, led by one of the Society’s members. Fortunately the rain held o and they were able to enjoy the spectacle of glorious carpets of bluebells beneath the wonderful fresh green canopy of the trees, accompanied by rich birdsong. e walk at Pondhead was unfamiliar to most, but their guide, Annette, gave them the interesting background to the history and current management of the enclosure. Apparently, it had become neglected and overgrown until Dave Dibden, who had retired from the Forestry Commission, was granted a lease to work there. Subsequently, he and his team of Pondhead Conservation Volunteers have completely restored the area to become a working coppiced enclosure. On an 8 year rotation, hazel trees growing under standard oaks are cut to provide useful wood for charcoal, which is made on site, for fencing or for thatching spars. A er cutting, more light reaches the forest oor and wild flowers, particularly bluebells, abound. ere are numerous paths within the wood, some wetter than others as the walkers found, but being in the midst of a wonderful New Forest woodland in all its early Spring glory, bursting with a sense of freshness and renewal, was certainly life enhancing. For members only, there are visits to gardens and plant nurseries and a party during the summer. On Saturday 27th July a Summer Show will be held in East Boldre Village Hall. Public viewing 2.15pm – 3.30pm. Membership is £10 per annum. Membership secretary Lynne Hubbard: 01590 612408. Beaulieu Horticultural Society’s spring show Pondhead charcoal burners site
